GenAI – The new reality in IT organization 2026+
A study on the transformation of IT organizations through GenAI
With GenAI – the new reality in IT organization 2026+,” we are continuing our successful IT Organization 202x study series in cooperation with iteratec, Lünendonk & Hossenfelder and VOICE e.V., we are continuing our successful IT Organization 202x study series and focusing in this edition on generative AI and its influence on IT organization.
GenAI is changing the rules of the game in IT organization. What was considered a technological vision just a few months ago is already shaping architectural decisions, operating models, and the role of IT in companies today. The speed at which the technology is developing is unprecedented and opens up enormous opportunities and new challenges for IT managers.
In a circle of IT experts from all study partners, we developed hypotheses about the effects of GenAI and tested them in this study. In addition, we provide recommendations for action based on the results of this survey and our many years of experience from a large number of IT transformation projects. We want to provide guidance and food for thought, as well as a solid basis for discussion for the development and transformation of your IT organization.
Specifically, we addressed the following questions in the current study:
- What are the major challenges and obstacles for IT organizations when introducing GenAI?
- Where do IT organizations stand in terms of using GenAI to optimize their IT processes, and where is the greatest potential?
- How should GenAI be organized in the future? What does this mean for governance, IT product orientation, end-to-end product teams, and collaboration with the business?
- What new IT roles and skills will GenAI create?
- How will the use of GenAI change the IT organization’s staffing requirements (expansion, reduction, restructuring)?
- How will GenAI affect the application landscape (new applications, replacement, standardization, etc.) and technology architecture?
Our hypotheses
1. Role of IT
GenAI is shifting the role of IT: Business is taking over end-to-end product development, while IT is becoming a strategic partner, advisor, and technical enabler.
2. IT staffing requirements
IT staffing requirements will increase in the short term due to GenAI, but will decrease significantly as GenAI maturity increases.
3. Roles, competencies, and skills
The establishment of GenAI will lead to massive personnel restructuring in IT; new skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and data and LLM expertise are becoming increasingly important.
4. Application landscape
GenAI is giving rise to new types of applications, transforming processes in existing applications, and requiring new architectural principles.
5. Data, mindset and expertise
The bottleneck is not technology, but rather data quality, data governance, data security, and a lack of AI mindset and know-how among users.
6. Cyber security
Cyber security is evolving into a strategic business process that integrates governance, specialist areas, and compliance (security by design).
